My Files is a service that provides secure access to documents stored on the SD61 server from any location. By logging in staff can download files on their Home Directories (H:) as well as any Collaboration Folders they typically have access to, for example the (W:) Drive.
Who can use My Files?
All GVSD Staff can use My Files, however those who have a district supplied Educator Laptop can access their work related folders and files without using My Files. Therefore, the following information is relevant primarily to staff who are using personal computers not supplied by the district.
What kind of device can I use?
Computers with desktop operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux) installed will provide the most reliable experience. Chromebooks are not compatible with My Files. No student information that is taken from the GVSD server should be put in any folders that sync to the cloud (ex. Dropbox, OneDrive, iCloud Drive). Please do not use public computers or family devices with a single logon.
But I have Google Drive, why do I need My Files?
Google Drive does not meet the provincial (FIPPA) standards for storing private student information, whereas using My Files does. Therefore any off-site work relating to a student’s personal information should be managed through a district supplied Educator Laptop or the My Files service.
How else is My Files different from Google Drive?
Currently MyFiles does not support live editing of documents. In other words, to work on a document you must first download the file to your computer, edit it and save it with the same program it was created with, and then upload the revised document to your district folder(s).
