Screen Recording on iPads

A new feature in iOS (the software that runs iPads and iPhones) is the ability to record your screen and audio from the iPad. Screen recording is a great way of capturing student learning, process and reflection in the form of a video for FreshGrade or ePortfolio uploads.

To access the Screen Recording, you must first enable the control button in the Control Center:

Click on the Settings button on the iPad

Click on Customize Controls

Tap the green “plus” symbol next to Screen Recording to add it into the “Include” section. Apps listed here will appear when Control Center is launched.

To start recording your screen:

  1. Swipe up from the bottom edge of any screen. On iPhone X or later or iPad with iOS 12 or later, swipe down from the upper-right corner of the screen.
  2. (Optional) Press deeply on gray record icon and tap Microphone to record external audio with the microphone.
  3. Tap Start Recording, then wait for the three-second countdown. A red status bar will appear at the top of the screen to indicate that recording is in progress.
  4. When you’re finished, open Control Center and tap red record icon (or tap the red status bar at the top of your screen and tap Stop).

To review your recording, go to the Photos app. Your recording will appear as the latest video file. You can trim this video as needed like any other video file.

Note: some apps may not allow you to record audio.
